Again, they can do it wherever they want because we know that the cards that are going to come out at the very end are on the top and bottom already. They put the cards in the middle of the deck. The six and nine are right next to each other. The first is showing the spectator the cards by holding the cards close together. A couple of deceptions here as you go through that are really going to make this trick come alive. And the reason for that is because at the end of the trick the two cards that jump out of the deck are the ones on the top and bottom and not the ones originally shown to your spectator. But what you’re going to do before the trick begins as a setup is to put the opposite two on the bottom. To start you going to take the two cards out that you’re going to show the spectator the six and nine of hearts and diamonds. So this is a very simple but highly deceptive card trick. Magic isn’t just silly card tricks it’s the art of deception - something wholly unique in its experience, an encounter so profound that we can’t help but carry it around with us for a while. It’s something that we can’t find anywhere else. But that break from reality is captivating. But, sure, we all know it’s just a trick, that some duplicity is afoot. Magic shows you what is possible in the world, and the spectator expects a magician to take them on a journey that they can’t obtain anywhere else. That’s a powerful thing.Īnd when that happens, a profound element of trust is instilled in the magician. Moreover, a magician’s goal is not merely to create a fantasy for their audience, but to bend, twist, or break their sense of objective reality. Magic comes alive when it’s shared between two people it’s meant to build a connection between performer and spectator. The secret - or method, in magic-speak - behind a trick is normally quite simple, but it’s the magician’s performative flair and masterly execution that makes it come to life.ĭeception-as-performance, however, is not just finger dexterity or a cleverly designed contraption. And the coin, magically, goes through the table. And the rest is a little bit of performative flair. But at the same time, you’re also tapping from underneath with your left hand. You’re going to justify that the coin is still in your right hand by tapping on the table. You come down here to set up for the illusion. Your left hand still visible obviously empty, as you come underneath the table you quickly, grab the coin. And you say something like let’s try something interesting. But the coin, is obviously still in your lap. But the motion of your hand continues as if you had picked up the coin. Transcript Make a Coin Disappear United Labor The entire adventure became my first book, “Magic is Dead.” I got to rub elbows with David Blaine and Penn Jillette, and I even had the opportunity to perform magic for the late Anthony Bourdain. The two years leading up to this event had been sensational, almost impossible to believe: I stumbled into the underground world of magic, became friends with the most influential young magicians in the world, and I eventually became a magician myself. I was there to film a magic trick that I had invented, which would then be sold to other magicians through a prominent online retail outlet. But this trip wasn’t just a playful jaunt. I was in Sin City for Magic Live, the largest convention for magicians in the United States. It was August, 2017, and the lion was a statue outside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It was as if he was taunting me to enter the 30-story building that he was so aggressively guarding: a massive casino. I could see the gold lion even before my cab came to a stop: the flowing mane, the three-foot-long fangs - leg muscles knotted, ready to pounce.
